Fisherman’s Beach Redevelopment
Whilst employed at GHD, Directors Darren Hall and Richie Schultz developed designs for a two storey development at Fisherman’s Beach Torquay. The original design incorporated a restaurant at first floor accessed from The Esplanade. When negotiations with the preferred restaurant operator failed, Four18 Architecture were engaged by GORCC to undertake the redesign, documentation and contract administration as a single level building whilst being respectful of this iconic location.
The design responds to the unique location with the patterned block work reflecting the whethering of the cliff faces, the low profile design nestling within the sand dunes and the use of cypress pine which will weather over time to reflect the surrounding Moonah landscape. The facility incorporates a range of users consulted as part of the process including Torquay Angling Club, Torquay Marine Rescue Service, a commercial kiosk operator and the community. The development has been overwhelmingly supported by the community since it’s completion in early 2012 and receives unprecedented use by locals and holiday makers alike. Approval for a pop-up bar on the esplanade level which will operate over the summer months is currently awaiting planning approval.
